169 years ago Carl Zeiss made a name for himself in Modern History by being ahead of his time. Today, the company he created wants to do it again. Since then, they have maintained the level of excellence in the design and quality of lenses for cinema, photography, research instruments... They are the greats of optics. And they have poured all their experience into a unique device: Zeiss VR ONE.
How are the Zeiss VR ONE?
This VR/AR device was created through a series of premises, among which were to be accessible to the general consumer, reduce the lenses to the essentials to enhance the experience and reduce costs as much as possible. And boy, have they succeeded. Winner of the 2015 iF Design-Award for its design, this smartphone device is available for sale for just $99 through the Zeiss website.
Its goal is simple but ambitious. It is to turn the smartphone into a Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality device. Zeiss VR ONE is a headset with a system of lenses and a tray in which the Smartphone is placed. The lenses produce the stereoscopic effect and the content is produced.
The distinctive note is that many Virtual Reality devices remain "just" that. However, Zeiss VR ONE uses the Smartphone camera to make Augmented Reality possible as well. That is, seeing through the glasses the real world and interacting in it with virtual elements. It was originally intended for use with the iPhone 6 and Samsung Galaxy S5. During development, they introduced trays adapted for smartphones of different dimensions, making it the most versatile device so far.
